The Science of Stress — and Why Some of It Is Good for You

Stress has a reputation problem. It is treated, in most popular health discourse, as an unqualified harm — something to be minimised, managed, and if possible eliminated. This view is both partially correct and significantly misleading. The full picture is considerably more interesting, and more useful.

Two kinds of stress

The distinction that matters most is between acute stress and chronic stress. These are not simply the same process at different intensities — they are physiologically distinct, and they have nearly opposite effects on the body and brain.

Acute stress — a sudden challenge, a deadline, a difficult conversation — activates the sympathetic nervous system and releases cortisol and adrenaline. This response sharpens focus, increases energy availability, and prepares the body for action. Research by Daniela Kaufer at UC Berkeley found that acute stress actually promoted neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells) in the hippocampus, improving memory and cognitive performance. The stress response evolved precisely because it improves performance under challenge.

Chronic stress — sustained activation of the stress response over weeks and months — does the opposite. Chronically elevated cortisol suppresses immune function, impairs memory consolidation, promotes inflammation, and is associated with increased risk of depression, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline. The stress response that was adaptive in short bursts becomes destructive when it never turns off.

The Research

A landmark 1998 study by Shelley Taylor introduced the "tend-and-befriend" response — the observation that, particularly in women, stress activates not just fight-or-flight but also social bonding behaviours. Oxytocin released during stress promotes seeking social support, which in turn buffers the physiological stress response. The social dimension of stress management is often underappreciated.

The mindset effect

Perhaps the most striking finding in recent stress research is that beliefs about stress change its physiological effects. In a study by Alia Crum at Stanford, participants who were told that stress enhances performance subsequently showed different cortisol profiles than those told that stress is harmful — even when experiencing identical stressors. The meaning assigned to a stress response changes the body's response to it.

It is not the stress that matters most. It is what you believe about the stress.

Building resilience

Resilience is not the absence of stress — it is the ability to recover from it. The research points to several factors that build genuine resilience:

The reframe: Instead of asking "how do I reduce my stress?", ask "is this stress acute or chronic?" Acute stress can be a signal that something matters and you are rising to meet it. Chronic stress is a systems problem — it requires structural changes to the sources of sustained activation, not just coping strategies.
